Q: What does Speak Our Language refer to?
A: We are a language company that currently specializes in Spanish instruction for companies, individual adults, and schools. We will eventually add other languages to our course offerings besides Spanish.
The name Speak Our Language means that our programs teach you how to actually speak Spanish. The use of “our” has multiple meanings: It indicates inclusion and a focus upon the community from a global perspective. “Our language” also means the language of our company – a company steeped in professionalism, grammatically correct language, and a culture of diversity that incorporates the Latino Community as our classroom without walls.
Q: Why is the company no longer referred to as S.O.L.?
A: The acronym for Speak Our Language was SOL from 2005 to 2009. We began using the initials of Speak Our Language as an acronym for the Spanish word “sun,” which also became our logo. Because the sun is a powerful and positive symbol – full of life and emitting energy – just like our teachers and programs, we kept the sun and dropped the acronym to avoid any confusion with our company going by two names. You may have also noticed that we updated our logo a bit and revamped our website in 2009 as well, to reflect a more sophisticated, yet still playful style.
Q: Who are the teachers for Speak Our Language?
A: All adult teachers are licensed professionals with 4 year degrees in Spanish Education, Bilingual Education or a Master’s in Foreign Language Education, in addition to Master’s Degrees in a related area.
All adult teachers must have near-native fluency at a minimum and possess a current teaching license from the Department of Education to teach in Ohio. Additionally all teachers have had background checks and are currently employed in school districts in the Columbus area.
Our elementary programs are led by professionally trained instructors, some of whom may or may not hold a teaching license. All primary school program instructors and bilingual assistants have been fingerprinted and background checked to comply with school safety standards, and have been CPR trained.
Q: Is the curriculum for the programs one that continues or are the lessons just isolated and different for each session?
A: The unique quality of our company is that we do have a curriculum that we have designed. Each class has a progression plan for you to continue your language studies in a logical, step-by-step program.
Q: So, will I actually be able to converse after just one class?
A: ¡Sí! We have a unique methodology and approach that really does get you speaking even in the very first class. Your progression after that will depend upon the amount you study outside of class as well as your class attendance. If you do the homework and attend class – we guarantee that you can carry a 15-30 minute conversation with a native Spanish- speaker, completely in Spanish, after completing one full module of classes (module can be 10-16 hours, this will depend upon the type of program in which you enroll).
